Americorps

AmeriCorps, the "Domestic Peace Corps", is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in team based, results-driven service in the five priority areas of education, public safety, the environment, homeland security, or other human needs.

AmeriCorps programs provide full- and part-time opportunities for participants to provide service to communities, either at home or somewhere else in the United States, through community organizations, schools, and agencies.

In exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance and an education award at the completion of their term of service to apply to college tuition or student loans. They gain skills in working with people and organizations, and have the satisfaction of contributing to society. AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps

NCCC teams are made up of women and men age 18 to 24 who serve a full-time, ten-month term to help solve community problems around the country. They work in groups of from 10-12 members, focusing on the target areas of education, the environment, unmet human needs, and public safety. Projects are typically six to eight weeks in duration, and members return to their regional campus between projects.

Typical activities involve helping students who are reading below the national average gain self-confidence and the ability to move to the next grade, building low-income housing, working with the homeless, planting trees or working with habitat restoration.

Board and room are provided, and an education award is made at the end of service. For more information, call 1-800-731-0002, or go to www.americorps.org
