Scholarship Scams

Possible Scholarship Scams

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." This advice from the ND Attorney General's Consumer Fraud division (1-800-472-2600) refers to possible scholarship scams. Some search firms offer a money back guarantee, but you must prove that you are ineligible for every scholarship that was generated by the company. Sometimes written rejection letters are required. Not every company contacted by the student will respond with a rejection letter; therefore, it's often impossible to get a refund. It takes time, but there are many free resources to learn about various scholarships. College Information Service (CIS) at Student Loans of North Dakota offers a FREE scholarship search. Contact CIS at 1-800-554-2717, or go to http://www.mystudentloanonline.com/cis.jsp.
