Do's and Don'ts of Resumes

Do:

  • Be concise and specific
  • Leave plenty of white space
  • Make wide margins
  • Spell everything correctly
  • Use action verbs & key words
  • Be honest
  • Use high quality white/off white paper
  • Keep it short (one page is best)
  • Vary style & content for the desired position
  • Proofread, proofread, proofread
  • Have someone else proofread it, too

 

Don't

  • Be too wordy
  • Repeat yourself
  • Use abbreviations
  • Handwrite it
  • Use obvious photocopies
  • Use an old resumé with obvious corrections
  • Use flashy graphics
  • Add irrelevant information such as date of birth, marital status, etc.
  • Assume one kind of resumé will be all you need
