Differences between a resume, curriculum vitae (CV), and a portfolio

  • A resume is a summation of your work history and education, typically no longer than 2 pages.
  • A curriculum vitae is used by higher education and more professional positions to summarize education received, classes taught, certifications, professional publications, and speaking engagements.
  • A portfolio is a collection of work samples typically organized in a 3 ring binder. Portfolios may be brought out at interviews to show examples of work. Typical contents of portfolios include:
    1. licensures
    2. certifications
    3. letters of recommendation
    4. media samples
    5. written samples
    6. other past work accomplishments.
